Literary Illustration

For this project, we were required to create an illustration that captured the essence of a literary passage. For my passage I chose a segment from George Orwell's Animal Farm:

But as the animals outside gazed at the scene, it seemed to them that some strange thing was happening. What was it that had altered in the face of the pigs? Clover’s old dim eyes flitted from one face to another. Some of them had five chins, some four, some had three. But what was it that seemed to be melting and changing?

For the illustration I first sketched the scene, then traced all the elements in Illustrator. The outlines were then printed off, and shaded using graphite pencils. The shaded image was then scanned to illustrator, and overlaid on the composition to add the texture. The colors were kept dark and subdued to reflect the mood of the scene. The shadow of the main figures was also changed to add another level of meaning into the illustration.
